Mimashima Records

An outlet for the underground alternative scene, based in Liverpool.
After years of going out and listening to local bands, we wondered why so few actually made it beyond mid-week gigs in dingy venues.

Phunkin DJs featuring Pamela Fernandez

Rich Barker, aka Phunktros, might be an unfamiliar name but he is no stranger to house music. After studying at SAE London, Rich ventured into clubland with his first venue being Ministry Of Sound. DJing for over twelve years, Rich has also organised and promoted several music events in the North West such as “Wonderland” at The View in Frodsham and “Allure” at Loaf in Chester, as well as being involved in numerous other event nights.

His wide knowledge of music stems not only from playing out but producing tracks and pointers from various contacts within the industry have also given Rich a unique insight into club life. Although concentrating on electro and dirty house, he is one of the few remaining DJs who can turn his hand to almost any style of electronic music.

Steve Jamieson began his career as a light jockey for Ritzy Nightclubs and progressed to becoming a DJ in late 1992. Since then he has worked for many of the major nightclub operators from the days of Northern Leisure, now Luminar, and is now doing what he does best with his own unique night “Party Floorfillers” with Brook Leisure. Steve has been writing and producing for some time, but it was only in Spring 2006 that he teamed up with Rich Barker to form Phunkin DJs.

Pamela Fernandez may be universally recognized as the voice of “Kickin’ In The Beat”, an all-time house anthem originally released by Cutting Records in 1992 and re-released in the UK by Ore in 1994, but her story begins in the wonderful world of fashion. Spending years on that circuit, her face graced print media, television and runways, appearing in several top US magazines, commercials and talk shows.

Prior to laying one of the most sampled vocals in the history of dance music, Pamela came into the music scene as an exceptionally versatile singer, performing in some of the most prestigious venues in the US, including the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Brooklyn Academy of Performing Arts and the infamous Hollywood Palladium.

Based in Chicago, Pamela now regularly tours across the Midwest and beyond with her seven-piece band " Rhythm City" with a repertoire spanning four decades and countless genres. She is currently working on a one woman show called "Pamela's Dreams"; This show will reflect many different styles of music about life and the laughter, love, loss, hopes and dreams that come with it.

Being absent from clubland since the early nineties, Pamela was unaware that the original “Kickin’ In The Beat“ a cappella had been used on numerous re-workings, bootlegs and compilations. This August, the vocal was relaid for the first time since 1992 for “Kickin’ In The Beat 2006”.

As for a mission statement from these three, Pam herself puts it best:
“I'm bringing the glamour of the past to the present and taking it right on into the future”.
